What Are Objective Lenses?
The Objective Lenses are the large disc shaped glass outlets at the end of a pair of binoculars, that sit the farthest from your eyes. The sizes of the glass outlets are represented by the second number and read in millimeters: 7x35 would be read as seven by thirty five millimeters. They typically range between 20mm and 50mm, though there are exceptions.
Why Should I Care?
The objective lenses play a large role in determining how much light can enter your pair of binoculars, this helps you determining just how bright and detailed an image you will see when you look through your optics. The size of these main light gatherers when divided by the magnification is called the exit pupil diameter which is read in millimeters, the higher the better, which is the number one consideration when determining how well a pair of optics will work in low light conditions. The Exit Pupil diameter isn't the only factor to consider when determining how night-ready your optical devices are: the type and number of coatings, and quality of glass that the lenses and prisms are made from is also important to consider. I go into a little more detail on other areas of the site.
